One or two private rooms in a shared house on our 23-acre farm, 10 mins to Delta Terminal @DTW. We are two humans and one dog who have some spare bedrooms in the upstairs of our modest but cute and quirky farm house.
We can accommodate up to four adults and one child (but not huge adults -- these are two double beds in an older house with small bedrooms). Bedroom 1 has a full-size bed with comfy adaptive foam mattress. Bedroom 2 has a full-size daybed with an adaptive foam mattress topper plus a twin size trundle bed underneath. Guests get shared use of common areas of second floor, including half bathroom, desk, and sitting area; for bathing, there is shared access to shower/tub downstairs. Vaccinated dog lovers only; all bookings must be made at least one day in advance, no same day bookings.
Ours is a brick farmhouse built in 1944, in nice condition. You will have the entire one of two bedrooms to yourself, with near-exclusive use of the upstairs sitting/reading area, a desk for working, and a half bath. The first bedroom is west facing (afternoon light) with light blocking curtains and blinds, the second bedroom is east facing. In the upstairs sitting area, we have snacks, water, and an electric kettle so you can enjoy some tea or instant coffee. There is NO PRIVATE ENTRANCE, you must enter via backdoor and then go through the kitchen to get upstairs. Please be aware that this is a shared house on a busy farm and that areas outside the visitor space are in active use by the residents.
To stay here, there are a few things you should know:
- Ya gotta be vaccinated for COVID, flu, measles, and stuff like that. I'm immunocompromised and actually can't receive certain vaccines because of my condition, so we rely on you to help keep me safe!
- You must LOVE (or at least tolerate) dogs. We have one super friendly and boisterous Border Collie type dog, and he will want to meet you. He will want you to pet him. He doesn't go upstairs, so the Homestay is free of dog dander.
- Also you should not be afraid of poultry. We have free range chickens, ducks, and turkeys (and also pigs and sheep on pasture), and they think humans = treats so they will come up to you. No bueno for people with chicken phobias.
- Speaking of being a farm -- You might have to share the upstairs space with a farm helper (this is assuming you only need one room, and that the farm volunteer is in the other room). If we have a farm helper, he/she/they may be in the second room, so not a random person but someone we have vetted and are already living with.) We sometimes have volunteers or other friends/visitors on relatively short notice. While we will let you know if we already have someone in the other room when you book, it is entirely possible that someone helping on the farm (or an occasional family member) will show up and use that space shortly before your arrival or possibly during your stay.
- This is not a space for really tall people -- the upstairs has relatively low dormer ceilings. We once had someone bail because he was 6'7".
- You do have to climb a one and a half flights of stairs to get to the space; at least two people have said the stairs are steep (they seem normal to me but not to my friend Julie and also some guy who stayed here in 2018 and was NOT happy about the stairs).
- Since the space is upstairs in an older house, it can be difficult to keep it cool in summer. We make great pains, and can bring in an auxiliary air conditioner, but if you need it to be less than 68 degrees Farenheit in July to be comfy, this might not be your ideal spot!
- You are welcome to light breakfast fare like toast, eggs, coffee/tea, oatmeal, cereal. However, we ask that guests not plan on doing any other cooking, or at least discuss an agreement for limited kitchen use. There's just a LOT going on in the kitchen due to its central location in the house, and trying to have two different people cooking at the same time can be a lot.
- Unfortunately, this is not a walkable neighborhood. Since the road is super fast with no shoulder, it's not even a bikeable neighborhood. Guests should plan on having their own transportation, because there is no bus and only one pizza place in terms of restaurants that deliver. We try and keep light snacks like chips and granola bars upstairs for when you're feeling snacky, since the options to step out are limited. There is Uber service though, since we are near the airport.
Access: Guest bedrooms, upstairs sitting area, upstairs half bath, downstairs full bath, LIMITED kitchen under certain circumstances with prior approval only. Guests may access washer/dryer in basement but must check in first to get a walk through of how to use. Yard access and limited orchard access with host approval (for your safety, as some livestock roam in that area). Guests may NOT access outbuildings/farm animals without orientation and permission from homeowner. Owner bedroom and downstairs office are off limits to guests. No extra guests, events, or parties.
Interaction with Guests: Owners Paul and Kim are both agricultural professionals and wildlife biologists, with a lot of plates in the air. We have hybrid positions with some work from home and some in office work; usually at least one of us is home (although we might be out in the barn, animal sheds, or out on the farm field or in the forest.) We also sell to customers from our farm stand, so there may sometimes be other people visiting the house or parking in the driveway.
We enjoy your company, but also respect your privacy; head upstairs for alone time, or come downstairs if you feel like a chat. We welcome visitors of all religions, genders, sexual orientations, races, and national origins, and we ask the same of our visitors; guests engaging in any form of discrimination, hate speech, or xenophobia are not welcome here. Se habla español; limited communication in French and Chinese also possible.
